Before You Renovate: See the Possibilities First
Questions to consider before changing a layout, selecting finishes, or starting work.

Begin with the problem you want to solve
A renovation works best when the goal is specific: more useful storage, better traffic flow, improved daylight, a more open kitchen or a layout that supports everyday routines.
Consider the entire space
A wall or doorway does not exist in isolation. Evaluate circulation, sightlines, furniture placement, storage, lighting and how nearby rooms work together.
Separate design vision from structural decisions
A designer can help you explore layout concepts and desired outcomes. Removing walls or altering structural elements requires review and approval by the appropriate licensed professionals and permits where applicable.
Select materials as a family
Gather samples of flooring, cabinetry, countertops, fixtures and paint in one place. Compare them in both daylight and evening light to make sure their undertones feel harmonious.
Give yourself room to adjust
Plan a realistic contingency and document decisions before construction begins. Changes are often less stressful when priorities and tradeoffs are clearly understood.
